Big Rig Run 5k run/walk to benefit missing and exploited children

DALLAS (August 2011) – Whether you’re a trucker or exhibitor attending the Great American Trucking Show or a local runner or walker looking for a summer 5k, make plans to participate in the Big Rig Run 5k run/walk. Scheduled for Friday, Aug. 26, 2011, at Katy Trail (www.Katytraildallas.org), the event kicks off at 7 a.m., when local temperatures are typically 78. The flat, shaded course was the site of last year’s Too Hot to Trot run, which drew more than 70 participants.
Interested runners and walkers can pre-register at www.bigrigrun.com. The event is free and includes a Big Rig Run T-shirt, optional transportation to and from the run, a goody bag and snacks. First through third place medals will be awarded for top male/female finishers in three age groups. Participants who hold a commercial driver license will be eligible for Fastest Male/Female Trucker awards. Registration will also be taken on site.
A portion of the proceeds will benefit the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, in support of Truckers News efforts to encourage truckers to be on the lookout for children in peril. Additional donations will be accepted on site during the event.
The Truckers News Fit for the Road Big Rig Run 5k also shines the spotlight on the serious state of truckers’ health and demonstrates how even small changes to diet and exercise can result in big pay offs. While more truckers are making lifestyle changes to improve their health and fitness, an alarming number continue to struggle with obesity and the serious diseases associated with a sedentary lifestyle.
Long-haul trucker, marathoner and Fit for the Road columnist Jeff Clark will be on hand to participate in the run and to discuss how he fits fitness into a schedule that includes up to 14-hour-work days and more than 100,000 miles per year on the road.
The event is sponsored by Detroit Diesel, Freightliner, John Christner Trucking, Right Weigh, Swift Transportation and TA/Petro.
